About the Wildlife ExplorersThe Wildlife Explorers (Formerly the YOC) is the junior membership of the RSPB, focusing mainly on 7-12 year olds, with a teenage section called the RSPB Phoenix. With over 150,000 members it's the largest club in the world for yound people interested in birds and the environment. The RSPB has over 30 years' experience in delivering informal education - providing stimulating games and activities to get environmental messages across in an exciting, fun way. Members receive the award winning magazine Bird Life six times a year. Each magazine features one project. These projects are fun, educational, participative and help develop responsibility. One such project is the Big Garden Birdwatch which has been running for 18 years. Young people throughout the country spend an hour counting the types and numbers of bird species in their gardens. This information is collated and totalled to give the nations Wildlife Explorers Top Ten garden birds. Last year, 30,000 children participated in the Big Garden Birdwatch. The 19th Wildlife Explorers Big Garden Birdwatch took place on the last weekend in January 1998.
BirdLife also has 3 competitions in each magazine, as well as activity pages, and entertaining, educating articles. Local Wildlife ExplorersThe group no longer has a local Wildlife Explorers, as the leader has moved.
