Nottingham RSPB Local Group

Registered Charity Number 207076

RSPB local groups aim to involve RSPB members and the wider public in the society's conservation, education and fundraising activities. The Nottingham group was formed in 1974 and now has around 500 members.

Our membership is varied in age and experience and comes from all walks of life and professions. We have a common interest in birds and wildlife which may be pursued by joining trips, meetings or fundraising events or simply via our newsletter. Membership is currently £5 per year per household.

A copy of our constitution is available to download as a PDF document:

Meetings

Between the months of September and April we hold indoor meetings at the New Mechanics Institute on North Sherwood Street Nottingham. These are held on the first Wednesday of the month. There is a small charge made for those who attend these meetings to pay for room hire and the professional speakers who entertain us after brief group business has been dealt with. Meetings start at 7.30pm and usually end at around 9.30pm. Tea and coffee are available.

The annual general meeting is held in May, and the June to August meetings are held outdoors as walks at local venues. New members are always welcome.

Trips, Walks and Mini-Breaks

We run monthly coach trips to nature reserves around the country. These trips involve around 2-3 hours travelling time from Nottingham and take in the North Norfolk coast, South Yorkshire, the Midlands and parts of Lancashire. Pick up points are Newark, Lowdham, Burton Joyce, Carlton Square and Maid Marian Way. The trips cater for all types of birdwatcher, from the first-timer to the expert. NB: these trips are not suitable for children under seven.

For those who like to stay nearer home, we have beginners' walks, local walks, nightjar watches and 'own car' trips. The walks are to some of the very good local reserves, last for just a few hours and, are not in the least strenuous.

Own car trips go a little further to places like Rutland Water, Whisby in Lincoln or Carsington Water. Our Mini Breaks began as week-ends with an overnight stay, but now last for four days, enabling us to go further afield. Recent breaks have been to Devon and Kent. Transport and hotel accommodation are included.

The Newsletter

Members receive a quarterly newsletter - The Knot.

This includes news, views, articles, forthcoming events, past and present experiences around the bird world and information on what's happening in and around Nottinghamshire. Booking details for trips are included.

Members receive a yearly itinerary with dates of all meetings, trips, walks etc.

In The Community

We go out into the community around Nottingham during the year raising funds for the conservation work of the RSPB, recruiting for the national RSPB as well as the local group and selling RSPB goods. We attend and host a variety of events and are keen to share our enthusiasm for birds and wildlife.

To spread the word for conservation and open the world of wildlife to others, we undertake fully illustrated educational talks to groups of all kinds.

Anyone wishing to arrange talks contact:

For those with an interest in birds and their welfare, we can offer advice and support, such as the placing of nest boxes and bird feeders.
